Shannon Lin (she/her) is an emerging dance artist based out of and originally from Edmonton, Alberta. She has trained and competed in various styles of dance for over ten years at Dance Theme prior to pursuing a BFA (Honours) from Simon Fraser University’s School for the Contemporary Arts in Vancouver, BC, and has completed her studies as of December 2020. With an extensive ballet background through completing the vocational and graded examinations under the Royal Academy of Dance curriculum, Shannon has also taken her training outside of the studio into touring competitions and conventions such as The PULSE on Tour, and Jump, NUVO, and The Dance Awards through Break the Floor Productions. Other notable experiences include attending the RAD Dance Challenge, as well as taking masterclasses from artists at the Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance in England. Most recently at Simon Fraser University, Shannon has undertaken her training in various modern techniques such as Cunningham, Graham, Limon, and Horton, while also performing in several school performances featuring original works and repertory by Joshua Beamish (MOVETHECOMPANY), Vanessa Goodman (Action at a Distance), Judith Garay (Dancers Dancing), Anya Saugstad, and many others. Shannon has also collaborated with other students and artists in the School as a choreographer for student film projects.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Video: And Along Came Tomorrow (Dir. Valentine Dumec)I.
My work investigates the nuances found within human nature and the vibrant cries of the imagination as a reflection of oneself. I am drawn toward the exchange between the internal and external realities that are awakened in my interactions with others. What I think versus what I speak, and what I envision versus what I see.
II.
Ultimately, I am most driven toward the idea that dance allows us to express what cannot be put into words. My movement is inspired by the amplified noises that live inside our minds and the stories that are never forgotten yet also never told.
III.
I seek to translate these secrets into rhythms and shapes that an audience deciphers as their own. I aim to not only move an audience through emotional underpinnings, but also inspire them to tap into their hidden selves to reveal their raw and honest perspectives of existence.
